🇬🇧 Karnataka High Court, Cubbon Park and Vidhana Soudha:
A Walk Through Bangalore's Historic Heart
Our walk began at the Karnataka High Court
This red building with six grand columns, built in 1868, still carries the spirit of British India. It’s called Attara Kacheri, which means “Eighteen Departments” in Urdu — that’s how many government offices it originally housed during colonial rule.
The stone lions guarding the steps may be weathered, but they still have that regal air. I sat beside one — and instantly the photo felt like “a queen with her silent bodyguard.”
Behind the green gates, with trimmed bushes and old-style lamp posts, time seems to slow down. Court sessions are still held here, but everything whispers of a past that refuses to fade.
Next was Cubbon Park, the lungs of the city. Laid out in 1870 and named after Sir Mark Cubbon, a British commissioner, the park started as a few dusty trails and saplings. Now it’s a lush botanical forest — bamboo, eucalyptus, ancient banyans.
Hidden deep inside are a Victorian library and a charming children’s toy train. Some trees were even hand-planted by British botanists.
He stood among the eucalyptus trees like part of their stillness. Light filtered through the tall branches, and the air smelled like damp pages and sandalwood soap.
As night fell, we reached Vidhana Soudha — the seat of Karnataka’s legislature. Built in 1956 by independent India, it stands as a symbol of self-rule. It’s the largest legislative building in the country, carved entirely from granite.
But before that? There used to be a small village here, and a temple. The British used the area for recreation, until the old was swept away to make room for a new seat of power.
Today, Vidhana Soudha is a landmark — especially at night, when the domes glow and the building turns into a glowing epic monument.
You don’t rush here. You stand still. You look. You absorb.

прогулянка історичним серцем Бангалору
Наша прогулянка почалась біля Високого суду Карнатаки.
Ця червона будівля з шістьма колонами, зведена у 1868 році, досі зберігає дух британської Індії. Її називають Аттара Качері, що з урду означає «вісімнадцять департаментів» — саме стільки урядових установ тут діяло за колоніальних часів.
Кам’яні леви при вході хоч і потріскались, але все ще мають королівську поставу. Я присіла біля одного з них — і фото одразу стало схожим на «королеву з мовчазним охоронцем».
За зеленими воротами — ідеально підстрижені кущі, старовинні ліхтарі. Тут усе ніби сповільнюється. Засідання досі тривають, але простір дихає минулим.
Далі — парк Куббон, легені міста. Закладений у 1870 році, він отримав ім’я британського комісара Марка Куббона. Спершу тут були лише пилові стежки та кілька саджанців, а зараз — справжній ботанічний ліс: бамбук, евкаліпти, вікові баньяни.
У глибині парку — вікторіанська бібліотека і дитяча залізниця. Деякі дерева висаджували вручну британські ботаніки.
Він стояв серед евкаліптів, ніби частина цієї тиші. Світло пробивалося крізь верхівки дерев, а повітря пахло вологим папером і сандаловим милом.
Коли стемніло, ми підійшли до Відхана Соудха — це парламент штату Карнатака. Збудований у 1956 році вже незалежною Індією, він символізує самоуправління. Це найбільша парламентська будівля країни, повністю викарбувана з граніту.
А раніше? Тут була сільська місцевість і храм. Британці використовували територію для відпочинку, поки не знесли старе і не заклали основу нової адміністративної влади.
Сьогодні Відхана Соудха — візитівка Бангалору. Особливо вночі, коли куполи підсвічуються, і будівля перетворюється на сяючий епос з легенди.
Тут не хочеться поспішати. Просто зупиняєшся. Дивишся. Вбираєш.
